After weeks of suspense, schemes and sabotage, The Celebrity Traitors has reached a thrilling end
Spoiler alert - This article reveals details from The Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Throughout the season, audiences saw eliminations, double-crosses, intense glares, and a memorable moment that pierced the overwhelming tension.
However on Thursday night, the ultimate victor of the inaugural celebrity edition was revealed.
Out of 19 contestants, just a handful were left standing: Deceivers and loyal players competing for the prize.
Before long, the field narrowed to only three contenders: the remaining contestants.
In the end, comedian Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a surprising result that broke the internet and left him emotional.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he declared, revealing to the other players that he was actually one of the deceivers. "I'm an awful human being."
"You played amazingly," they comforted him. "Everything's fine."
Online platforms quickly erupted with this development. "Most awful traitor ever being the best traitor ever," wrote a viewer.
"There could not have been a more iconic ending," wrote a different person, while someone else called it "the television highlight of the year."
His chosen charity, a cancer charity, gets to keep the entire winnings, with the final pot reaching eighty-seven thousand five hundred pounds.
The comedian's evolution from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
However, his victory still left the nation in shock, according to entertainment reporters.
"The thought of him, among everyone, executing an expert performance in deception felt about as likely as him maintaining a straight face through his comedy routines."
During follow-up conversations, the other contestants summed up why no one had truly doubted him.
"Alan could have appeared to breakfast in traitor attire and I wouldn't have believed he was deceiving us. I was too busy laughing," one participant said.
"The majority didn't vote for him because how does one vote for a person so loveable?" asked a different contestant.
Carr said he had "absolutely loved" his time on the show.
"I'd like to participate once more... I don't think it would be successful again!"
Thursday evening's episode was extended to over an hour on the network. It had a different start than usual, as every celebrity were aware who'd make it at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard particularly inspiring, and very un-Traitors-esque music, as the episode revisited key scenes from every remaining player's experience in the game.
True to form, the comedian gave us some of the most memorable lines.
"Let's face it, I started the competition a bit of a nervous wreck. I've thrown close allies to save myself, I've eliminated national treasures in plain sight. Apparently I'm a better liar and traitor than I thought."
Meanwhile, another contestant commented that reaching the conclusion was "significantly more pressure than competing with England", while another said he was "totally surprised" to have made it so far.
Early on of the finale, several players seemed to be attempting to become the fashion standout of the competition, taking over from an earlier departed fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at breakfast looking like a 1950s US chat show host in a checked maroon suit, before changing into an embellished light-colored outfit.
But he was outstyled by another contestant's burgundy formal wear. Impressive style.
Following this was the challenge, with the remaining contestants getting on board a train named - naturally - The Traitors Express.
The challenge involved ripping up images of eliminated players. Have sympathy for a player who was hit in the head multiple times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Soon after, the moment arrived for the roundtable.
The deceivers did a pinky promise beforehand, vowing to stick together. "We've come a long way, I'm not going to throw him under a bus," said a player, while the other simply laughed.
And one adhered to their agreement. Yet, having slipped unnoticed for most of the game, their partner still received the majority elimination votes.
The remaining traitor looked like he was in significant distress to be the final deceiver remaining. "Being alone, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm unpredictable, a rudderless ship."
Social media and viewers were equally disappointed.
"I did NOT want this contestant to be eliminated. An endearing deceiver," said a commentator.
"You will forever be remembered in the show's legacy," posted another user.
But there was little opportunity to dwell on this departure. Before long, they were at the endgame - which was the moment everyone anticipated.
The last players stood over the fire pit. And the alliance broke down, precisely when it was most crucial, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their ally, who turned against them.
"It hurts to be betrayed at the final moment like that," remarked the ousted contestant. Later, it was revealed that if they ever communicate, the betrayed player calls the other by a betrayer's name.
Ultimately, just three players were still competing: the final trio.
A contestant, appearing quite pleased, voted to end the game. So did another, and everything depended on the final participant, who made the identical choice - which meant that the traitor was the winner.
According to commentators, the scene where remaining contestants comforted the winner was "beautiful TV". "I predict it could be a contender for outstanding scene at television honors," they commented.
Fortunately, the winner quickly regained composure from his emotional outburst, and could finally appreciate his victory.
"Such an emotional journey. I thought I was terrible at deception, my expressions gave me away and now I stand a winner," the winner said.
And he even joked about that infamous murder - his best friend during the initial stages - by reaching over the presenter in the concluding moments and making contact.
"You've got something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The recent episodes of celebrity gossiping, scheming and sometimes surprising incidents may seem like a bizarre fantasy. But it really did all happen. And we will miss it.
