A trio of officers perished and at least 15 people were hurt in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female got detained at the site and another man who fled after the incident was located soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location displayed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion included 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
